Mel Perkins, has 39 years of hairdressing experience, currently heads the Yazz Hairdressing Academy, dedicating 25 years to education. A respected mentor, Mel’s diverse career includes work in TV, film, and London theatres. She is passionate about shaping the future of hairdressing, Mel empowers emerging talents at the academy, embodying a fusion of artistry, education, and lifelong commitment to the craft.

Welcome to Carolyn Jacobs’ Course Recruitment and Course Administration at Yazz Hairdressing Academy! In addition to our apprenticeship recruitment program, Carolyn also recruits learners for private courses in Hairdressing and Barbering by providing expert guidance. Paul met with my daughter, and the powerful and motivational experience that she received in speaking with him was incredible. [H2] LEVEL 2 FOR HAIR PROFESSIONALS – APPRENTICESHIPS IN BARBERING

The Level 2 Diploma in Barbering for Hair Professionals covers a range of practical skills and theoretical knowledge to prepare students for entry into the barbering industry.

[H4] COURSE OUTLINE

A barbering apprenticeship is one of the finest ways of training to become a barber. Apart from it being an earn while you learn route, because all apprentices are employed from day one, you will develop real, practical and commercial skills highly valued by employers. You will attend the academy one day per week and work within a barber’s salon as an apprentice for the remainder of your working week.

[H4] COURSE DURATION – STARTS IN JANUARY OR SEPTEMBER
Level 2 in Barbering : up to 18 months

[H4] COURSE CONTENT
Consultation
Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
Cutting hair using barbering techniques to create a variety of looks
Style and finish men’s hair
Cut facial hair into shape
Shaving Services
You will also be given a real insight into the Barbering Industry to include what employers will expect from you and how important it is to sustain your employment so you can progress further in this exciting and innovative career.
[H4] ASSESSMENT
During the course a portfolio of evidence will be collected, by students/tutors for each unit. Assessments will consist of observed practical evidence, knowledge and understanding questions and one-line exams. A practical end point assessment like a trade test will be carried out by an independent examiner at the end of the qualification.
[H4] WAGE
From 1st October 2010 a National Minimum Wage (NMW) for apprentices was introduced for trainees aged 16-18. The rate is currently £7.55 per hour due to a recent increase 1 April 2025, but may vary on age at start of course. The new NMW applies to time working plus time spent training as this is also part of the apprenticeship. You will work a minimum of 30 hours a week (max 40 hours a week / 8 hours a day if under the age of 18) with 20 days paid holiday per year plus 8 bank holidays. At present a grant of up to £1000 is available for salons accommodating our students but may change (subject to meeting requirements).
[H4] ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Preferred Level 4 or above in English and Maths
16+ years of age
Limited places available for 19 years+
All students will need to find a placement in a hair salon for the term of the apprenticeship for 30 -32 hours per week before they are eligible to start the Apprenticeship course. Guidance with this will be provided.
[H4] QUALIFICATIONS
On successful completion of your barbering apprenticeship framework, you will have achieved qualifications in:
City & Guilds Level 2 Barbering Diploma for Hair Professionals
Level 1/2 Functional skills in English
Level 1/2 Functional skills in Maths
A Barbering Intermediate Apprenticeship Framework Completion Certificate
You will also have a good understanding of Employment Rights and Responsibilities and you will have further developed your personal learning and thinking skills. Best of all you will be a competent junior barber, with a record of sustainable employment in the industry, all of which will mean you are a highly valued asset to the barbering profession.

[H2] LEVEL 2 – APPRENTICESHIPS IN HAIRDRESSING

Students will complete the Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals within 22 months with an opportunity for successful candidates to progress to Level 3 Hairdressing.

[H4] COURSE OUTLINE

The Level 2 Diploma for Hairdressing Professionals covers a range of practical skills and relevant theoretical knowledge to prepare students for entry into the hairdressing industry. Practical work experience will be an essential part of the course and you will already be in or seeking full time employment in an independent salon that we will work closely with allowing you to build up realistic commercial experience with progression onto Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing.

[H4] COURSE DURATION – STARTS IN JANUARY OR SEPTEMBER
Level 2 in Hairdressing : up to 22 months (successful candidates could progress to Level 3 in Hairdressing).

Jenny Casey
Creative Director

I have been a professional in the industry for many years and carry a vast amount of knowledge, experience and expertise. I’m a perfectionist and pride myself in understanding client needs to achieve what is best suited for lifestyle and overall maintenance. I have a broad portfolio of experience and am adept at achieving tailored haircuts to suitability and now serve as an educator at our Hairdressing Academy. Recently, I have attended hairdressing shows and courses in Milan, London, Leeds and Manchester to expand my knowledge on the latest trends, which I utilise in our Guiseley salon.

Marc began his career in Leeds and, after decades at the forefront of international hair artistry, has come full circle—bringing global expertise back to his roots.
Trained at the Toni&Guy Academy in London, Marc went on to shape his career at elite salons across London and Sydney.

I started at Yazz in 2016 after finishing school. I trained at the Yazz Hairdressing Academy and achieved my levels 2 & 3. I then had further training with Anthony. I love my job and working with my team, but most of all ensuring my clients feel confident and happy.

Jenny Casey
Creative Director

I have been a professional in the industry for many years and carry a vast amount of knowledge, experience and expertise. I’m a perfectionist and pride myself in understanding client needs to achieve what is best suited for lifestyle and overall maintenance.

Marc Thibault
Creative Director

Marc began his career in Leeds and, after decades at the forefront of international hair artistry, has come full circle—bringing global expertise back to his roots.
Trained at the Toni&Guy Academy in London, Marc went on to shape his career at elite salons across London and Sydney

Grace Simms
Senior Stylist

I’ve been working in hairdressing since the age of 13 originally as a Saturday girl. I have always been passionate about hair and eight years on I am fully qualified in Level 2 Hairdressing, a diploma in Level 3 Hair and Makeup Media and currently studying my Level 3 Hairdressing.

Sophie Stirk
Stylist

After having enjoyed creative subjects in school, i decided that i wanted to pursue a career in hairdressing so i began studying my NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing at the Yazz Academy. Since starting my apprenticeship at the Rawdon salon, I have felt inspired not only by my training at the academy but also the extra training i receive on a one-to-one basis with Anthony. I am now working towards my end point assessment and look forward to building my own clientele.

Cheyenne our new salon assistant and apprentice at Guiseley Salon is just beginning her Hairdressing journey. She has fitted in with the team perfectly and besides working in the salon is currently studying NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing at Yazz Hairdressing Academy, Leeds.

Anthony Donaghue
Creative Director

I started at Yazz in 2018 having moved to Leeds from the Northeast. I’ve been in the hair industry for 30 years and my passion lies within cutting including all lengths but especially in precision and shorter hair. My other passion lies within teaching – whether it be, private courses or inspiring the apprentices in advance hairdressing to achieve their goals. Nothing gives me more pride when my students pass their final exam in their end point assessment.

Olivia Steele
Creative Director

I’m a seasoned Creative Director with numerous qualifications and nearly two decades of expertise in the hair industry. I bring creativity and precision to every styling endeavour I undertake, ensuring all my clients leave feeling fresh and rejuvenated. I have been at Yazz for most of my working career, and I have met so many amazing people throughout my time here which I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment. If you would like to be a part of my journey and help create new memories at Yazz, I look forward to seeing you very soon.

Will definitely be returning :) Anthony is a true artist. Excellent customer service understanding of requirements Always a pleasure, the staff are all friendly and professional and always an excellent cut by Anthony. Massive shout out to Alanna at Rawdon, yet again she’s done an amazing job with my hair colour, going from blonde to red-ish she’s absolutely nailed it!
She’s such a talented lovely young lady, definitely found my forever hairdresser xx Excellent customer service and a great cut. Great staff and haircut Jemmy is fabulous Ffion is a lovely receptionist great place for your hair. But the price is a touch high
