What is Solar PV?

Solar PV, also called Photovoltaic, uses the sun's energy to convert daylight into renewable energy. The electricity is then consumed within the home, reducing your need to buy energy from a supplier. When a Solar PV system produces more energy than a home needs, the extra energy can go to your immersion heater. Solar PV is not to be confused with Solar Thermal - while Solar Thermal heats water only, Solar PV gives you free electricity and hot water. What is the calculation for over 70% savings on your home electricity based on?

Savings over 70% are based on a detached house using 7,388 kWh per year with a 16 panel (7.1 Kilowatt-Peak) system generating approx. 6,265 kWh annually. Savings are also based on optimised battery charging between 2am–4am on a Night Boost Plan. Actual savings will vary per home. What does an Electric Ireland Solar PV installation cost?

The cost of a solar PV installation ranges in price from approximately €6,800 upwards before the SEAI grant is applied. The cost depends on the number of panels and any additional features, like a hot water diverter, you may include as an added benefit. ​

What is included in the Solar PV offer?

As part of our solar PV offer we provide each customer with a full consultation to ensure you are getting the optimal size solar PV system for your home and energy needs. ​All installations include the following:​High quality solar PV panels.​Recommendation of a string or hybrid inverter. Our team will help you decide which is more suitable for you. An inverter converts electricity from DC to usable power (AC) for your home.​A hassle-free grant process- we deduct the grant directly from the cost, so you don’t have to worry about claiming it back later.​Submission of NC6 form to ESB Networks so you can avail of Microgeneration tariff for any exported electricity. Electric Ireland currently offers a rate of 19.5c p/kWh for any electricity exported. ​Our experienced fitting crews follow a strict health and safety approach to protect you and our staff. ​We also offer advice on optional products like a hot water diverter to send excess electricity to heat your water, and the benefits of adding battery storage. ​

How much is the Solar PV grant & am I eligible?

All homeowners, including private landlords, whose homes were built and occupied before 2021 can apply. This is defined as the date your electricity meter was installed.The grant value is calculated on the total maximum output of the Solar PV system, measured in kWp. The grant value is €900 per kWp up to 2 kWp and €300 for every additional kWp up to 4kWp. The total maximum grant value is capped at €1800.A post works BER assessment must be carried out before the grant can be processed. Do I need planning permission to install solar panels?

The installation of solar panels on domestic properties is exempt from planning permission. Since the 7th of October 2022, there is no longer a limit to the area of solar panels which can be installed on rooftops of homes, anywhere in the country.

Will there be any disruption during the installation of my solar battery?

When we install the Electric Ireland Solar battery in your home, it is usually placed as close to the main electrical distribution board as possible. The location will be agreed beforehand with the homeowner. Installation typically takes one day to complete. Most of the work will be in the area of the distribution board, minimizing any disruption.

Is good quality broadband required?

A good quality broadband connection is necessary to monitor how much power your home is using. Once installed the homeowner can review both the live and cumulative energy usage in the home on the free energy app from their smartphone.

What is Microgeneration?

Microgenerators generate clean, renewable energy to meet some or all of the electricity demands of a household or business.The Government Microgeneration Support Scheme is now available so that those with a registered microgeneration device can sell any excess electricity back to Ireland’s electricity grid.This will help households reduce their carbon footprint and save money.

How can I avail of Microgeneration?

Most Electric Ireland microgenerators have Solar PV installed on their roof. Your Solar PV installer would have registered an NC6 form on your behalf to ESB Networks. This form provides us with the information we need to set you up.

What rate will I get paid?

Electric Ireland is pleased to offer a rate of 19.5c per kWh. We estimate that this payment will range between €50-€300 per year, depending on the size and type of your microgeneration system (a typical installation of 10 panels would be about €150 per year).

How does the microgeneration payment work?

Payment is made in the form of a credit on your electricity bill reflecting your microgeneration export in that period.

What type of battery do Electric Ireland supply?

Electric Ireland supply home batteries made by Dyness. ​Each battery is a fully integrated energy storage solution enabling you to change the way you manage and control their energy.

What size are the batteries?

We offer 5.1 kWh, 7.2kWh, 10kWh and 15kWh Dyness batteries for residential use.

How big is the battery and where can it be installed?

The 5.1 kWh battery measures approximately 558mm x 545mm x 150mm and weighs 44kg.​The battery is normally installed in the garage or utility room, location can be agreed at time of site survey. Installation normally takes less than a day to complete.

How does the battery work?

The battery stores the unused generated electricity from your solar PV array for use later in the day. This ensures that you use practically all the power your PV has generated. The battery can also be set to charge on cheaper night rate electricity which can then be used during the day for further savings.

What kind of warranty comes with the Dyness battery?

The Dyness battery comes with a warranty of 7 years. The battery’s warranty can be extended to 10 years with Dyness’ approval by registering on their official website: http://www.dynesstech.com/sign.html. The battery should offer over 6,000 charge cycles at a 90% depth of discharge and will maintain 70% of its installed capacity after 6,000 cycles or 10 years, whichever occurs first. Can I add additional battery storage capacity later if my needs change?

Yes, additional battery modules can be simply installed into your Dyness battery should your requirements change.

Does the Dyness battery need to be connected to the internet?

Yes, the Dyness battery relies on an internet connection to provide the system monitoring. Broadband is necessary to remotely identify and fix system faults online, as well as provide regular, free software updates to ensure that the functionality of the system is up-to-date.

How do I monitor my Dyness battery?

The free Dyness app provides an easy-to-use interface giving you the ability to monitor and manage your energy usage and generation 24/7. The Dyness app is available to download in iOS or Android stores – just search for “Dyness”.

Will I still have power in the event of a power cut?

Due to grid safety requirements the battery will not operate in the event of a power cut. However a back up reserve unit is available as an optional extra.

Can I purchase a Dyness battery from Electric Ireland if I already have solar PV installed?

Yes, as well as supplying and installing a battery as an optional extra with our solar PV installations Electric Ireland can supply and install a battery to homeowners who have existing solar PV installed in their homes.​
