Tour planning, coupled with my own avalanche forecast, is my biggest risk mitigation tool. During a day of backcountry skiing or riding, the vast majority of our day is spent walking uphill, usually quite slowly, to access our intended objective. It stands to reason then, that we should think about the up track as just as much a part of the day as the ski back down. As backcountry skiing continues to grow in popularity, I think it’s important that we all continue to think critically about setting great skin tracks to minimize exposure to avalanche terrain and maximize opportunities to further our knowledge of the mountains.

Trip Report: Embracing the Alaska Factor
It snowed at least twelve feet, the bulk of it falling in about three days. Our neighbors lost their skis and a tent to an avalanche that struck their camp. Our kitchen tent pole broke in half.
