There is virtually no drift between the homepage signal and the sub-page evidence. The H1 Rooted in Flavor is supported by a 70-year timeline of product development, and the promise of a flavor adventure on the homepage is backed by granular tour logistics including pricing, accessibility details, and manufacturing schedules. The messaging remains consistent across all audited pages without shifting target audiences or value propositions.

Box 300Nottingham, PA 19362 [H2] Sustainability We recognize the importance of being good stewards of our natural resources, as well as how crucial passing on a healthy, safe environment is to future generations. That's why managing our waste and using recycled products as much as possible are at the forefront of our decisions. [IMG: 60023 2 Forever Good 3D Case Closed Brown 3D Wfile] [H3] Manufacturing Most manufacturing operations produce waste and Herr's® is no exception. However at Herr's, most of the waste generated is used at the nearby Herr's Angus Farm. Water discharge is used for spray irrigation, sludge for fertilizer and potato skins for fodder. Also, any product that does not meet Herr's quality standards is used as cattle feed. Our manufacturing systems have been carefully designed to be environmentally friendly and energy-efficient, and our steam recovery system saves energy by capturing the plant's hot water and turning it into hot air that heats the building. Our starch recovery system collects excess potato starch, which is then sold to fine paper manufacturers. By making ecologically friendly choices like these, we have ensured that as little waste as possible leaves our plant. At the consumer end, there is also very little waste in Herr's products. Unlike many other foods, Herr's products are totally consumed by its customers. There is no waste in bones, rinds, stalks, or leaves. Herr's snack food products, therefore, contribute very little to the municipal waste stream and must be judged as "minimum waste" products. [IMG: 1 Oz Regular 107] [H3] Packaging The most important environmental issue challenging Herr's and other snack food manufacturers is packaging. Herr's has also addressed this issue. For instance, all of Herr's corrugated containers used to ship fresh product to the stores are re-used over and over. When they are no longer usable, they are then collected, baled and sold to recyclers to be made into more corrugated or other paper products. To ensure freshness of its products and minimize food spoilage and food waste, snack food manufacturers must use high barrier plastic film for packaging many of their products. While these thin packaging materials are not biodegradable, they compress very readily and, because of this, they take up very little space in landfills and other refuse disposal sites. While natural biodegradability of waste is of course desirable, authoritative studies have shown that very little biodegrading of any kind occurs in landfills. This is due to the absence of light, moisture, heat and bacterial action beneath the surface. [IMG: Adobestock 823852002 Preview (1)] [H3] Sustainable Packaging Materials Besides being extremely compressible, plastics are chemically inert. They do not break down and leak toxic chemicals into the water table or into the atmosphere. And because they do not break down, plastics provide a stable base for holding other landfill materials in place. In waste-to-steam facilities, plastics become a real asset. Because plastics are made from petroleum rather than trees, they burn almost completely. Additionally, when burned, plastics produce more heat than coal. Unlike coal however, they do not in any way contribute to acid rain. Of course, consistent with industry practices at large, Herr's also flushes each of its bags with nitrogen to ensure no oxygen remains in the bag. By doing so, Herr's is able to preserve its products without generating any waste. [IMG: Herrs Recycles] [H3] Recycling It is becoming increasingly evident that landfills are not the answer to waste management. Recycling offers the best solution. Many plastics are now recyclable. More are becoming so. Unfortunately, thin snack food packages are not easily collected from consumers so that they might be recycled. This has been a major problem in recycling snack food packaging. However, Herr's and other snack food companies have succeeded in reducing the amount of packaging by reducing its size and thickness. [IMG: Angus Farms] [H3] Herr Angus Farms Most snack operations produce by-products, and we're no exception. However, at Herr's, most of our solid and water by-products are recycled at the Herr Angus Farms. Water discharge is used for spray irrigation, sludge for fertilizer and potato skins for fodder. Also, any product that does not meet our quality standards is incorporated into cattle feed that our farmers have fondly coined as "steer party mix." Nearly 1 million gallons of water drawn from the processing of Herr's potatoes are pumped to the farms for spray irrigation weekly on the 1500-acre farm, which includes a cropping program of corn, soybeans, wheat and hay. The Herr Angus Farms works with such environmental agencies as the Environmental Protection Agency, Chester County Conservation District, and soil conservationists to ensure erosion control and improve stream, ground and surface water quality. [IMG: Herrs Environment 1MB] [H3] The Herr's Commitment Herr's passion for quality leads it to seek new and better ways to serve its customers and at the same time protect the environment. From new products, to packaging, to guaranteeing freshness in every Herr's product, Herr's is constantly working at continuous improvement. It recognizes that environmental protection is a long-term commitment. Herr's has made that commitment and will continue to be responsive to all advances in technology, new protocols for better health and new discoveries in the environmental sciences. It will continue to support government and public efforts to expand environment protection activities that will help safeguard the environment. Herr's is very concerned with environmental issues. And because of this, the people at Herr's, from its family oriented management to its over 1,500 valued employees, are doing their best to meet the environmental issues head-on by implementing environmentally friendly practices and procedures throughout the entire Herr's organization.

[H2] Over 70 years of making snacks that make people smile James S. Herr broke away from his family’s business of chicken farming to build up his very own snack company — one that continues to thrive, over 70 years later. [IMG: Herr] [H3] 1946 James Herr buys potato chip company for $1,750 Herr Foods Inc.’s story began in 1946 when 21-year-old James Stauffer Herr buys a small potato chip company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for $1,750. In 1947, the business moves into a vacated tobacco shed on the Herr family farm. As he learns more about the business, Jim Herr develops new and better cooking processes and a delicious snack food becomes even better. As demand for Herr's Potato Chips grows, so does the company. [IMG: Jim Herr and Mim Hershey on their wedding day in 1946] [H3] 1946 (later) Mim Hershey, will you marry me? In September 1946, Jim Herr proposes to Mim Hershey after an annual farm show in West Lampeter. Five months later, they are married in the Hershey family's house in Paradise. [IMG: Herr] [H3] 1949 New Building In the spring of 1949, Jim located a 3,600-square-foot bakery facility available for rent in the small town of West Willow, Pennsylvania. The bakery, along with an adjacent house, became workplace and home for Jim and his wife Mim. [IMG: Newspaper clip of the article on the Herr] [H3] 1951 Factory Fire Threatens Future On September 5, 1951, Herr's experiences a major disaster. Late in the afternoon, Jim is headed home from his deliveries, and Mim is preparing the evening meal, when the fire breaks out in the plant. Although the equipment had been shut down for the day, cooking oil had dropped onto a hot fire brick and burst into flames. The potato chip factory is consumed by the fire. [IMG: Herr] [H3] 1952 Welcome to Nottingham With help from family, friends and the bank, the Herrs buy 37 acres and build a new 4,500 square-foot plant. Jim Herr equips the new plant with its first automated cooker, an early example of the company's commitment to innovation and quality. From the beginning, Jim adheres to his underlying business philosophy of providing quality products, at competitive prices, and backing them up with honesty and dependable service. [IMG: Herr] [H3] 1956 Expanding - New Warehouse By 1956, just ten years after its inception, Herr's® Potato Chips was well-established with an expanding customer base. To accommodate the growth, the company built a 7,000-square-foot warehouse for storage of its allied products. [IMG: Timeline Block 5] [H3] 1958 "You want to BBQ what?" In 1958, after careful consideration, Herr's begins adding seasoning to its potato chips. The barbecue chip is the first flavored chip the company tries, and it is still in production today. Over the years, the company has added a number of flavors, including Sour Cream & Onion, Old Bay, Salt & Vinegar, Pizza, Red Hot, Dill, Cheddar Horseradish and many more. [IMG: The first sign of Herr] [H3] 1961 Herr's Becomes Herr Foods Inc. [IMG: Herr] [H3] 1963 Growing company has first TV commercial The company doubled in size by constructing a 21,000 square-foot production facility in a field behind the Herr family's house. The company began a generous profit-sharing program for its employees. This year they also aired their very first television commercial. [IMG: Herr] [H3] 1964 Cardboard Barrel In 1964, Herr's® embarked on a packaging venture that helped revolutionize the company's sales. For years, Herr's® chips were sold in wax paper bags for 5, 10, and 15 cents a bag, depending on size. A packaging salesman convinced Jim to try selling chips in a 20-ounce cardboard barrel. The sturdy barrels would prevent chips from breaking and protect them from light, which preserved freshness. [IMG: Boxes of Herr] [H3] 1968 Growing, Growing, Growing! In 1968, the company operated 35 sales routes out of Nottingham and five from New Jersey. An additional 23,000 square-feet was added to the plant. The new space provided more room for cooking, packing, and potato storage. A year later, Herr's® added 8,000 square feet of new stock rooms. [IMG: J.S. Herr named Pennsylvania] [H3] 1969 Jim Herr: Businessman of the Year As the company expands, Jim Herr's reputation as an exceptional businessman grows as well. In 1969, Jim is named Pennsylvania's Businessman of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. [IMG: The Herr] [H3] 1976 Expanding Westward Herr's purchases a small manufacturing plant in Chillicothe, OH to make potato chips. [IMG: New Herr] [H3] 1976-1984 More than a chip company To keep up with consumer demand, Herr's begins producing a number of new products: 1976 cheese curls; 1978 popcorn; 1981 pretzels; 1983 corn and tortilla chips; and 1984 onion rings. [IMG: James S. Herr becomes President of Snack Food Association in 1979] [H3] 1979 James S. Herr becomes President of Snack Food Association [IMG: Dsc7443] [H3] 1983 Jim returns to his farming roots By the early ‘80s, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is enforcing stricter waste disposal legislation. Jim Herr’s search for a creative solution ends in his own backyard — negotiating a deal with a young couple to help him establish Herr Angus Farms. Today, the farms produce wheat, soybean, corn and barley, while acting as recycling centers for the production factory’s potato peels, rejected food products and wastewater. [IMG: Herr] [H3] 1988 Going global In 1988, Herr's expands snack sales internationally and is now available in over 37 countries around the world. [IMG: Construction of the Herr] [H3] 1989 Potato chip factory turned tourist attraction In 1989, Herr’s constructs a 15,000-square-foot visitor center adjacent to the plant. Herr Founder (1924 - 2012) In 1946, James S. Herr launched his career with a $1,750 investment in a small Lancaster, Pennsylvania potato chip company and a keen desire to make and sell high quality snack foods. At the time, sales averaged $30 a week. But, the 21 year-old's persistence and business acumen led him on a path of steady growth. By 2012 sales volume had expanded to exceed $250 million annually, and the Herr's payroll included some 1,500 employees dedicated to the production and marketing of 240 varieties of snacks in a nine state region. Jim Herr was recognized as a business leader and as an innovator and mentor within the snack food industry. He was President of Interstate Drilling Co. until it was sold in 2001, and held leadership positions on a number of local boards and religious organizations.
