As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded into creative industries, some of the biggest questions facing culture today centre around AI and the arts.
Is AI simply a new creative tool, or does it redefine entire industries? Who owns creativity in the age of generative AI? And how can technology amplify human expression while preserving authenticity and artistic value?
The AI for Good Global Summit coming up between 7 and 10 July offers a timely platform to explore these questions and many more. The AI Creativity and Culture track will bring together artists, technologists, musicians, filmmakers, and innovators to explore how AI is reshaping human creativity.
Big names in the entertainment industry are headed to Geneva, Switzerland, to provide their perspectives. John Legend, EGOT-winning multi-platinum singer, songwriter, producer and entrepreneur, will talk about AI and music in a discussion with Universal Music Group’s Michael Nash.
Goodwill Ambassador for ITU’s AI for Good AI Skills Coalition, will.i.am, and creative innovation advisor, futurist, multi-platinum Grammy-winning music artist, producer and tech entrepreneur, will take the stage on the summit’s closing day to discuss skills, education and AI to unlock opportunities worldwide.
The AI for Good Film Festival will feature a screening of RAISE, a six-part global documentary film exploring how AI is already being used to address humanity’s most urgent challenges and help build a future worth believing in. Directed by Nash and executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, the docu-series follows scientists, engineers, and pioneers deploying AI in measurable, real-world ways.
The film festival, now in its second year, has received over 1200 contest submissions, with selected films to be shown at the global summit.
AI for Good is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) – the United Nations (UN) agency for digital technologies – with partners across the UN system to demonstrate AI solutions for people, planet and prosperity. The annual summit is co-convened with the Swiss Federation.
[H5] Immerse yourself in AI
Live demonstrations and immersive experiences aim to bring creative concepts to life in unforgettable ways – like listening to the music of mushrooms. The Live Biosonification Performance by Bionic and the Wires will feature signals from mushrooms and plants transformed into sound and art through bionic technology.
The opening artistic intelligence performance, Beyond, directed by new media artist and ITU curator Harry Yeff (REEPS100), will showcase ethically trained music models working alongside human voices to create new forms of emotional expression.
In all, the programme reflects the fast-expanding breadth of AI-transformed creativity – from K-Pop robots and a robotic cellist to Never Give Up, a live violin performance by Manami Ito, the world’s first violinist recognized by Guinness World Records for playing with a prosthetic arm.
[H5] AI creativity and culture in the spotlight
Workshops, panel sessions and presentations will further explore the artistic possibilities of human-machine collaboration.
One segment – AI in Creative Industries: New Market Segment or Still an Enabler of Development? – examines how AI is transforming media, design, publishing, entertainment and more.
Another – AI and Fashion: Who Wins in the New Creative Economy? –  explores how AI-powered tools are opening new opportunities for designers and brands while disrupting traditional creative workflows.
The Art of Intelligence workshop introduces audiences to the evolving relationship between artists and AI systems.
Other sessions consider the future of ownership, authenticity, and value creation in the AI era.  AI, Creativity, and Ownership: The New Value Equation, for example, will feature  Bill Gross and representatives from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on how copyright, journalism, music, and creative labour are evolving alongside generative AI.
[H5] Canvas of the Future
The third edition of ITU’s AI-powered art contest, Canvas of the Future, invites creators, educators, technologists, and artists from all disciplines to share their visions of how AI is shaping the future of education and work.
Ahead of the summit, viewers can experience AI art along Geneva’s lakeside as part of a Quai Wilson exhibit throughout June, with a free public AI for Good art display featuring shortlisted artworks from this year’s competition.

The Global Symposium for Regulators concluding on 15 May in Ankara, Türkiye, brought together over 1,000 participants from all over the world to discuss “Navigating the digital frontier: Regulatory pathways towards a resilient and inclusive future”.
This theme signifies a fundamental shift in our role as a regulatory community – from merely reacting to technological disruption to proactively designing pathways to resilience and inclusion.
The exceptional period of technological advancement that we are experiencing brings a heightened responsibility. But it also presents an opportunity for regulators to address emerging challenges. In short, it calls for an approach that is constructive, forward-looking, and collaborative.
[H5] How to navigate a fluid frontier
Navigating the digital frontier means we must actively chart the course. We do not have the luxury of being passive observers.
We are not here to freeze the frontier. We are here to help everyone navigate it well.
In my view, navigation requires three things.
A reliable compass – to anchor every regulatory decision in the entwined aims of protecting human dignity, preserving fair competition, and prioritizing the most vulnerable.
Shared signals – to allow real-time, trusted information-sharing on emerging risks.
Willingness to move – to kick-start with pilot initiatives and regulatory sandboxes and then adapt at speed.
[H5] New guidelines for digital regulators
This makes the Best Practice Guidelines adopted at GSR-26 especially timely, as they outline the essentials of regulatory governance for a fast-changing digital environment.
This new edition explores how regulators can strengthen their mandates, capacities, tools and decision-making processes, so they are better equipped to support innovation while advancing inclusion, trust and resilience.
The guidelines from GSR-26 provide a shared reference point for building regulatory institutions that can respond to technological change while keeping people, public interest and sustainable development at the centre.
The digital frontier will not wait for us.
We need to navigate it together – with courage and clarity – so that we will go far.

“What do you see in the dark?”
Participants observe galaxies, experience outer space through virtual reality (VR) headsets, and perceive the universe in new ways.

“That is what we intentionally designed for – as an entry point to make space and our place in it feel human, accessible, and meaningful,” says Agnes Chavez, an interdisciplinary artist and educator who founded STEMarts Lab, which organizes the immersive Astro Tour experience.
For her, artworks can serve as a doorway to space science for young people, especially girls.
Pathways to the stars were the focus of the ITU Space Connect webinar for the latest International Girls in ICT Day.
Chavez explained how one 16-year-old girl, working as a co-creator with established scientists and artists, made her first “cosmic web” visualization through creative coding.
[H5] Space for everyone
Space-related careers today offer a growing range of entry points.

“Space is for everybody. You don’t have to be an engineer, you don’t have to be a scientist,” said hydrologist and space-science expert Raha Hakimdavar, founder and CEO of Zyon Space. “There is absolutely a place for you, and I think it’s actually a much bigger place for people that are coming from different disciplines.”
It needs to be understood as a wide-open field for problem-solving, starting with Earthly challenges like water scarcity, drought and emissions, she added.

Yet capable, interested girls can still encounter steep barriers, noted Maya Nasr, who co-founded and leads the Humanity United with MIT Art and Nanotechnology in Space (HUMANS) project, asking: “Is it because of personal limitations, or are there structural limitations of the system?”
Her own pathway to the space sector – from growing up in Lebanon to studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States – required persistent navigation, with a lot of self-doubt and questioning along the way.
Barriers to space entry can extend beyond gender, with passports, visas, export controls and place of birth adding further constraints, Nasr added.
Inspiration alone is not enough to keep people going through their studies or in the space industry, she added. Genuine inclusion depends on accessible infrastructure, funding, regulatory and visa streamlining, and equitable access policies.
[H5] Visible inspiration
Limited visibility, access and opportunity all add up to the industry’s persistent underrepresentation of girls and women.

“You cannot become what you cannot see,” said session moderator Edith Hattie Kalagho, co-founder of Spatial Girls Network. “Once given the opportunity, girls not only participate – they excel.”
Recalling her experience in geospatial technologies, Kalagho recalled: “There were very few girls and young women around me and even fewer who saw this as something they could be part of.”
That’s why girls need to be part of the conversation about space through the creative arts, too, agreed Chavez. “They know that they’re co-creators, they’re co-authors, and… they basically step into leadership.”
Girls and young women must be part of shaping the future of space-enabled connectivity, and their perspectives are essential to building resilient, inclusive and sustainable digital ecosystems.
