When Michael first visited Lympstone Manor, he was not only inspired by the potential to transform a dilapidated mansion into what has become a luxury country house hotel and highly acclaimed Lympstone Manor, he was equally excited at the prospect of planting a vineyard in Devon on the southwest-facing parkland overlooking the beautiful Exe estuary.
“Most of the great vineyards of Europe are all located near rivers, the Médoc châteaux of Bordeaux on the Gironde, wine estates along the Rhône, Loire, and Rhine rivers, the great port vineyards of the Douro. So why not the Exe estuary? Our climate is mild and the success of other local vineyards has convinced me that it will be possible to produce outstanding wines here.”

AWARDS
The very first wine to be released from the Lympstone Manor vineyard is produced from 100% estate grown Pinot Noir, overt black summer berries intermingle with subtle toast from the French oak, supported by delicate hints of sappy stems. The palate is balanced and juicy, displaying great poise and delivering a beautiful and long finish. This wine will develop further nuance and complexity with ageing. Aged for 18 months in French oak of which 30% was new.

International Wine Challenge 2023
Gold Medal award 95 points – The only English red wine to achieve a Gold Medal award this year. The judges commented, “A historic moment. A real Pinot Noir Trophy for England, and what a beauty! All the cool, bright-eyed scent of cherry blossom and rose, mingling with pink apple and strawberry fruit and slightest chew of red plum skins.”
Best Producer Trophy for First Vintage – A Trophy awarded to the producer of its best first vintage.
Medal at the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2023
Our Triassic Pinot Noir has won Bronze in the International Wine and Spirit Competition to add to its recently awarded gold in the International Wine Challenge.
The rigorous IWSC judges award wines from across the world and five still English red wines were awarded bronze medal status.

The first release of a still Rose wine from our estate in 2022 and produced from the “taille” pressing at the winery using some of the finest fruit from the vineyard to produce a very classic style, extracting the full potential from the Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier grapes and creating a field blend rosé perfect with food or as an aperitif. It is very much in the classic Provencal style with hints of wild strawberries lead into fresh citrus tones; this bright wine has subtle nuances of grapefruit, savoury notes and minerality, balanced with a mouthwatering acidity and just a hint of orange peel on the lingering finish.

The Classic Cuvée is produced by the méthode traditionellein the style of a premium English sparkling wine and has richness, depth of flavour and structure.
The first release of Sparkling wine from our vineyard in 2020 is a classic blend of Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay, with the latter predominantly aged in French oak for 9 months prior to blending. The resulting wine provides a rich, classical, style of sparkling; showing notes of apple, spiced pear, and toasted brioche, with a rich and creamy mousse. Due to the ripeness of fruit our vineyard provides and the richness of the blend, this wine requires minimal residual sugar to remain poised, elegant and balanced, providing a long and complex finish. Sourced exclusively from our vineyard at Lympstone Manor, partially aged for 9 months in French oak and aged for a minimum of 3 years on the lees.

Triassic Pinot Noir 2020, the first wine from the Lympstone Manor vineyard, has now been released and is available in the Restaurant and Pool House Restaurant & Bar. This extraordinary Pinot Noir has been enthusiastically received by experts and wine writers alike who have frankly been stunned that such a wonderful still red wine can be produced from young vine fruit grown on our single estate vineyard. It will certainly not be possible to produce Triassic Pinot Noir every year – it makes the very limited production of the 2020 even more special and precious than ever.
Meanwhile, Lympstone Manor Cuvée, our premium sparkling wine, continues patiently to age in the bottle on the lees, in readiness for release in Autumn 2023.
