Timeshifter
[H4] Timeshifter
When planning a mission to the International Space Station (ISS), timing is everything – timing the launch, the flight, when to dock, and complex crew schedules. These decisions depend on many external factors such as technical considerations, orbital mechanics, variations in the weather, and crew schedules. Timing is also a key factor in ensuring the astronauts are at peak performance. This is where Timeshifter becomes a key partner for Axiom Space. Timeshifter translates complex circadian science into products and services to give people control of their circadian rhythms, and is trusted when circadian control is critical for performance, safety, and health. One of the key factors to ensure peak performance is sleep timing, and Axiom Space astronauts are working with Timeshifter to ensure they will be ready before, during, and after the countdown starts. Appropriately timed light and dark exposure are central to the Timeshifter plan. Light can shift the circadian clock either earlier or later depending on the timing of the exposure and, if timed incorrectly, can shift the circadian clock in the wrong direction. The astronauts are provided with a detailed plan of when to see light (ideally daylight but high levels of blue-enriched internal lights will also work) and when to avoid light, by exposure to dimmer, redder-looking light, wearing sunglasses or scheduled sleep. Additional advice is designed to support the shifting sleep schedule including when to use or avoid caffeine, if the astronauts choose to, and when and how long to nap. Each Timeshifter plan not only includes the right time to employ these interventions, based on circadian science, but also takes into account existing commitments and constraints from the astronauts’ busy schedules.‍Learn more about this partnership.

José Andrés Think Food Group
[H4] José Andrés Think Food Group
Axiom Space worked in collaboration with Jose Andres and Think Food Group to create tailored dishes for Axiom Astronauts. The collaboration arose from the friendship between Chef Andrés and fellow Spaniard and veteran astronaut Ax-1 Commander Michael López-Alegría. To prepare the crew for the scheduled 10-day mission of Ax-1, Axiom Space teamed up with Chef José Andrés of ThinkFoodGroup, a brand that shares our ethos of spurring innovations and striving for excellence. In the months leading up to the flight, Ax-1 crew members took part in sensory tests with Chef Andrés and members of the ThinkFoodGroup culinary team. These tests helped the ThinkFoodGroup team to devise meals well-suited to the astronauts’ dietary preferences. The Axiom and ThinkFoodGroup teams worked closely with scientists in the NASA Food Lab to ensure the items meet nutrition and preparation guidelines. For the Ax-1 mission, the specially crafted meals leaned on flavors and traditional dishes of Commander López-Alegría’s native Spain, and for their first meal in space, the Ax-1 astronauts enjoyed Arroz Estelle Valencia, a classic Spanish rice dish. Later in the mission, the crew was able to eat Secreto de Cerdo with Pisto, a prized cut of Ibérico Pork with tomatoes, onions, eggplant, and peppers, and Chicken and Mushroom Paella, Spain's quintessential rice dish.
