Information Density — The Lens

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Info Density Power-words vs. Substance ratio.

The site exhibits exceptionally high information density, particularly on the Sizing Guide page. Headings avoid generic power words in favor of technical descriptors like High Volume (HV), Low Volume (LV), and Downsized. Body text provides specific measurements in centimeters and precise adjustment recommendations, such as ‘Adjust your normal measured size down a half size’ for the Remora model. The About Us page contains verifiable historical milestones including the founding of Nelson Sports, Inc. in 1987 and the ISPO Outdoor Award in 2004.

Information Density is read straight from the body copy: how much of the text carries grounded, checkable substance versus hollow filler. Below is the clean text the engine analyzed, then the industry’s known generic-claim patterns to weigh it against.

[H3] It all started here.

For over 50 years, Young Chu has shaped the climbing industry with world-class designs that push boundaries. And it all started with a simple sewing machine and a vision of the future of climbing.

SUB-PAGE (https://madrock.com/pages/sizing-guide/) Sizing Guide
[H3] Sizing Guide

Sizing climbing shoes without trying them on is the hardest part about finding the right shoe. We get it and we’d like to help alleviate that process as best we can.For our shoes, we list the men's sizing on the box and inside the shoe.We try our best to size true to US street shoe sizing, but this general rule will not be 100% accurate for everyone. Each foot is unique and we hope this guide can give you a better starting point when trying our shoes for the first time or trying a new model in our lineup.Using this guide, you’ll determine your fit, desired tightness, and measured size.

[H3] Fit
Am I HV or LV?

We have two distinct fits across most of our shoes, HV and LV. These correlate to the overall volume, or shape, of your foot.

[H4] High Volume
Caters to average to wide feet. Compared to LV, this shoe will be noticeably wider in the toe box.

[H4] Low Volume
Caters to narrow feet with smaller heels. Compared to HV, this shoe will be noticeably narrower in the toe box and shallower in the heel. Our low volume shoes are significantly low volume. If you do not have a narrow foot, you will have a hard time wearing this fit.

[H3] Tightness
How tight do my shoes really need to be?

You’ve probably heard that climbing shoes have to be painfully tight to be useful. That may have been true when climbing shoes were first created, but not anymore. We’ve done our best to invest in technologies that blend comfort and performance because when you feel good, you climb good. That being said, decide how tight you'd like your shoes.

[H4] Comfort
Comfortably tight right out of the box, slightly loose after the break-in.This fit allows your foot to be close to flat once the shoe is fully broken in.A good fit for beginners just starting to climb, or climbers that prioritize comfort.

[H4] Snug
Somewhat tight right out of the box, comfortably tight after the break-in.This fit will feel relatively tight, but you’ll be able to curl your toes a bit once fully broken in.A good fit for all levels, beginner to advanced, if you prefer a balance between comfort and performance.

[H4] Performance
Tight right out of the box, tight after the break-in.This is the “ideal” fit for climbing shoes that allows you to get the most out of your shoe.A good fit for intermediate to advanced climbers.

[H4] Downsized
Extremely tight right out of the box, extremely tight after the break-in.We don’t typically recommend downsizing in our shoes, but we recognize some climbers still prefer this fit. Tightness depends on your tolerance levels. If you can handle it, who are we to stop you?A good fit for advanced climbers who want even more than the most out of their shoe.

[H3] Measured Size
What size should I get?

Now it’s time to find our size. To do so, let’s get a measurement of your foot in centimeters.

Stand on a piece of paper and hold your writing utensil perpendicular to the floor.Consistency is key for accurate measurements!

Trace the entire outline of your foot.Remember to keep the writing utensil straight up and down!

Measure the longest distance from heel to toe in centimeters.

Compare that measurement to our sizing chart and that will be your measured size.

After deciding your fit, desired tightness, and measured size, consult the following to determine the size you should try out:Comfort: Measured Size + 1Snug: Measured Size + .5Performance: Measured SizeDownsized: Measured Size -.5 OR -1 (based on tolerance)Reminder, these sizes are suggestions and will not be 100% accurate for every climber. For example, if your foot measures 27cm, then your measured size is US M 9.Depending on your desired tightness, we'd suggest:Comfort: US M 10Snug: US M 9.5Performance: US M 9Downsized: US M 8.5 or US M 8There are some exceptions to this rule. Read on for more information!

[H3] Exceptions

This sizing advice holds true for most of our shoes. There are only a couple of exceptions:The Remora (slipper) and the Drone CS.Due to the nature of their construction and stretch, each will modify your measured size.

[H4] Remora (slipper)
Adjust your normal measured size down a half size.From the previous example,Comfort: US M 9.5Snug: US M 9Performance: US M 8.5Downsized: US M 8 or US M 7.5

[H4] Drone CS
Adjust your normal measured size up a half size.From the previous example,Comfort: US M 10.5Snug: US M 10Performance: US M 9.5Downsized: US M 9 or US M 8.5

[H1] From Dirtbag to Designer.

“I was so broke,” Young Chu recalls, reflecting on his early days living in Camp 4, Yosemite’s legendary climber hangout. Born in South Korea, Young began climbing in the 1970s, a time when boldness reigned and gear was scarce. He still remembers the day that changed everything. While hiking through the granite hills of South Korea with his father, Young witnessed rock climbing for the first time.
“You should never try that,” his father warned. But the sight ignited a fire in him. "My life was changed forever." - Young Chu
Despite his parents' general support for the outdoors, Young received no financial backing for climbing. For most, this would have been the end of the road, but at 16, Young found a way. With only his mother’s sewing machine, Young began crafting his own gear. A backpack came first, then a harness, and soon after, a helmet. His homemade equipment caught the eyes of his friends, and before long, Young was outfitting his circle of climbing friends.
“Eventually, I was making all my own gear.” - Young Chu
The idea may have struck like a lightning bolt while pushing through The Zodiac, or perhaps it emerged as he prepared for The Nose. But it was the harsh seasons in Yosemite that sparked his vision to manufacture gear on a larger scale. As each climbing season ended, Young found himself forced to sell his rock climbing gear to buy ice climbing equipment, only to reverse the process with each new spring. This constant cycle of scarcity fueled a vision.
“Making good gear isn’t hard,” he says. “Making it affordable, that’s the challenge.”
In 1987, Young launched Nelson Sports, Inc., designing shoes for mountain sports. He became the head designer for Five Ten, developing lasts—forms used to create the fit and style of shoes—that would become some of the most copied designs in the world. “I’m proud to say the lasts I developed, based on my own foot, are some of the best-selling and most copied designs in the world.”
But his ambition didn’t stop there. In 2002, Young founded Mad Rock, driven by a singular goal: to create affordable, high-performance climbing shoes. His relentless drive and commitment paid off, and in 2004, his Hooker Lace and Hooker EZ designs earned the ISPO Outdoor Award for footwear—a recognition he never expected. “I always thought awards like that were for companies like Nike and Adidas.”
Despite his success, Young remains inspired by climbing legend Yvon Chouinard (Founder of Patagonia) and continues to innovate with the same hunger he had as a dirtbag climber. His epic ascent of the North Face of the Eiger during a snowstorm is proof: once a dirtbag, always a dirtbag—only now with the experience and vision to keep pushing the limits of climbing gear.

[H1] The Beginning of Mad Rock.
Mad Rock began in 2002 as a small, climber owned and operated company that made innovative, highly technical and affordable rock climbing shoes. After many years and over a million pairs later, we still choose not to reflect on our accomplishments nor rest on our laurels-because our best shoes will always be the next batch! To us, "Innovation" isn't just a catch phrase-it's a challenge to be met daily. In that spirit, we embrace using the latest materials and technology to meet consumer demands while maintaining the high quality and innovative products that have put us on the map and in the packs of climbers around the world!
Refinement of an existing design can often be as labor intensive as creating an all-new one. Yet instead of making new models for the sake of making new models, Mad Rock is committed to making definite running improvements to our existing shoe models and offering a variety of new features, colors, and options to our increasingly popular hardware and accessory lines. Mad Rock's goal from the start has been to offer the most sophisticated designs and materials at a fair price, and now more than ever our message of value, quality, durability and climbing enjoyment rings true - so much so that our competitors are increasingly following our lead. We always thought that climbing should be enjoyed by everybody - and we aim to do that with the best gear at a fair price.

🧭 Industry Context — common generic-claim patterns in Ecommerce & Online Retail to weigh the text against
Generic Claims: best prices online, free shipping on everything, satisfaction guaranteed or your money back, trusted by thousands, premium quality at affordable prices, the best selection online…
Red Flags: no business address or company registration, manufacturer stock photos as product images, prices dramatically below market with no explanation, no return policy or extremely restrictive terms, fake countdown timers and scarcity indicators, reviews that read as fabricated or templated…
Semantic Drift Patterns: homepage claims premium but product pages show dropshipped goods, claims handmade or artisan but product images are manufacturer stock, homepage says ethically sourced but no supply chain information, claims exclusive products but same items found on Amazon and AliExpress…
Proof Expectations: verifiable business registration and address, real product photographs not manufacturer stock images, third-party reviews on independent platforms (Trustpilot, Google), clear return and refund policy with process details, specific supply chain or sourcing information, customer service contact with response time commitments…
