[H1] History Of The Lighthouse
Sally Fitchett founded The Lighthouse in September 1990. Until 1998, the school operated from two village halls.
In September 1998 we moved into a purpose-designed school in open countryside in Newington, South Oxfordshire. There are three beautifully equipped classrooms, each has its own outside area. We have another classroom for extra activities.
We have developed The Field to provide planting and digging areas, a mound, a log pile, and more.
The age range is 1 to 5 years.

**If you get Tax-Free Childcare, you’ll set up an online childcare account for your child. For every £8 you pay into this account, the government will pay in £2 to use to pay your provider.
You can get Tax-Free Childcare at the same time as 15 or 30 hours free childcare if you’re eligible for both.

Fees are to be paid on or before the first day of each term or holiday period. Fees are reviewed annually, notice of which is given
in April before the increase in September. There are no reductions for bank holidays, child holidays or sickness. We are flexible where possible but we cannot swap any prepaid or booked sessions.
One term's notice in writing is required (ie on or before the first day of the final term) or a forfeit of a term's fees must be
paid.

[H1] Curriculum
Every child is an individual, and is treated as such.
The Lighthouse sessions and the environment are structured in such a way that all the areas of the curriculum, both Montessori and EYFS, are linked and taught throughout the session.
We use My Montessori Child digital tracking system.

The Lighthouse is Montessori based. We have a wide range of Montessori apparatus, which is extended and renewed regularly.
We implement much of the Montessori philosophy, but believe that in rural Oxfordshire in the 21st century we must also incorporate other ideas.

[H1] The Montessori Method
The Montessori Method was devised by Dr Maria Montessori in Italy at the turn of the 20th century. She had several key theories about the child. The child’s ability to learn comes from within – a desire to learn – because he has an absorbent mind. Children have sensitive periods of learning – at different ages the child has a desire for different stimuli. The teacher’s role is very much that of a director and observer, not telling and doing, but showing and watching. The classroom is very important. Montessori called it the ‘prepared environment’. It has 6 basic components (see opposite).
“Dr Montessori felt that the goal of early childhood education should not be to fill the child with facts from a pre-selected course of studies, but rather to cultivate his own natural desire to learn. In the Montessori classroom this objective is approached in two ways; first, by allowing each child to experience the excitement of learning by his own choice rather than by being forced; and second by helping him to perfect all his natural tools for learning so that his ability will be at a maximum in future learning situations.” — A Parent’s Guide to the Montessori Classroom by Aline D Wolf.
