I would like to thank you for your interest and welcome you to the website of our superb day nursery and Montessori pre-school in Southend.
The day nursery is situated in a large impressive Victorian house surrounded by beautiful grounds covering ¾ of an acre, including its own separate Montessori preschool ‘My Little House and ‘My Little Forest’ for outdoor learning.
The nursery has been fitted with the most up to date childcare facilities and the gardens have state of the art play equipment and areas for all ages to guarantee your child’s happiness, fun and safety.

Oak House Montessori Day Nursery is an established nursery benefiting from years of experience due to previously owning and running Crowstone Montessori in Chalkwell since 1991.
We pride ourselves in maintaining a constant core staff for over 18 years and offering 10 different types of sessions, practically, tailor-made for you and your child’s individual needs.

Choosing a childcare setting for your baby is a difficult decision, something that we at Oak House Montessori Nursery fully understand.  We encourage prospective parents to come and view the nursery, during which time you will be shown around the building, explained to how our daily routines are carried out, meet the staff that will be caring for your baby and talking through any questions you may have.

[H3] Your Baby's First Day

On your baby’s first day you will be greeted by the staff and you can take your child in and settle them. A member of staff will greet your child warmly, speaking reassuringly to them while encouraging them to take part in the activities provided.
Throughout the day you can phone us to find out how your child is settling, however if your child is upset and distressed, we will contact you. At the end of their first day a member of staff will discuss with you what activities they have been doing throughout the day, what they have eaten, nappy changes/toileting and sleep. Again, this is a good opportunity to ask any questions.

[H3] Services Provided

Formula milk, bottles and food are included in your session price.  We ask that you provide nappies and baby wipes, a spare change of clothes in case of any little accidents, a pair of indoor shoes or slippers and appropriate outdoor wear.
Weekly planning is completed by the staff caring for your baby ensuring that a variety of activities are provided which cover all areas of learning and development.  By knowing the babies in our care very well we are able to plan activities that we know they will enjoy which in turn will help them progress in their next steps helping them reach their developmental milestones.
We offer two settling-in sessions, free of charge.  During these you will be required to complete a few forms which will provide us with information that will ensure that we can plan for your baby’s individual needs and preferences and make the transition between home and nursery easier.
We follow your child’s home routine as much as possible and document your baby’s day on the Famly App which contains details on when they have slept, what they have eaten, their nappy changes and you will be sent photos of them participating in activities throughout their session.

Your baby will have a ‘Key Person’ who will document observations and photos to show what your baby has been doing whilst in our care.  This will continue through the nursery throughout their time here and once they have reached school age you can download this to keep as a memento of your child’s first five years.  This Learning Journey’ is available for you to view at any time on the Famly App; this will contain observations, artwork and termly evaluations which details the progress of their development.
Advice on topics such as activities, behaviour, school transitions can be sought from any of our qualified, experienced staff.

Our babies participate in many activities as we cater for a variety of development levels.  This ranges from tummy time with various cause and effect, noise making and stimulating toys, to participating in messy play, dancing, construction and small world activities.
All children participate in song and story time as well as sensory activities.
At mealtimes our babies all sit together at low level tables or in low level highchairs to encourage social skills and table manners.  Staff will help to feed young babies and encourage self-help skills when the babies are able to feed themselves.

We have our own Cook and Housekeeper so we are able to offer meals to suit a wide range of dietary requirements.  We aim to make all meals and snacks healthy and nutritious with appropriate portion sizes for your child.
At mealtimes children sit together to encourage them to develop social skills and table manners.  The children are encouraged and supported to feed themselves, where possible, to develop self-help skills.
Weaning: We are able to provide meals suitable for babies who are starting on solid foods, either following a pureed food diet or baby lead weaning depending on your preference.
Snacks: A snack is given during the morning and afternoon sessions where children are offered fruit or vegetables.
At all mealtimes children are offered a choice of milk (when over 1 years old) and water (boiled for under 1 year old); water is available to every child throughout the day

“Welcome parents and carers to our Toddler Room. Within our space we have 3 rooms divided into areas:
art and crafts
small world and construction with role play and reading areas
soft play, climbing frame room
sensory room
Across the three rooms we are able to fully observe and expand childrens’ learning in all areas of development. We try and follow individual routines where possible and work in partnership with parents.
We like to do ‘circle time’ twice a day with the children, where we sing familiar songs and teach them numbers 1 to 10, colours and shapes. We also have a ‘story of the week’ which is read daily to the group.
Another activity we find the children enjoy is ‘magic box’ – inside this are a few recognisable objects which the children can not touch, the idea is to help children learn by listening and looking.
The softplay sensory room is a big hit with our toddlers, giving them the opportunity to freely explore the climbing frame, soft climbing apparatus and sensory equipment with confidence.

You may be considering starting potty training during this time of your child’s life; our staff are all aware that this is a time that requires sensitivity and patience.  Please speak to our staff in order to ensure that the methods being used at home are also being used here at nursery; the key to potty training is consistency and we aim to make this transition as easy as possible for you.

We plan for each individual child’s next steps and interests.  Using the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) curriculum a range of experiences and activities are provided to ensure your child develops in all areas, as well as having a fun filled time.

The children are able to participate freely in a variety of activities throughout the day, across three rooms.  We have a soft play and sensory room, with climbing apparatus, a role play/free playroom and a messy room where children are able to be creative using different media and materials.
Outside play is available everyday with access to a partially covered decked area as well as the AstroTurf area where they are able to learn ball skills and other games.

“Hello and welcome to the 2-3’s group.  We have lots of fun and there is lots to do to occupy inquisitive little minds!
We have two groups within this age range, Tweenies (2-2.5 years) and Kindergarten (2.5-3 years), who have free flow across two or three rooms (depending on the group), including our art rooms where we can get very messy and enjoy playing with playdough, painting, water play, drawing and sticking, as well as other fun craft activities. Our main play room is for our role play and small world activities, reading and literacy activities and construction. In these rooms we have a large variety of toys and activities which help us with our learning and imaginative play. We also have circle time each day where we sing, read stories, dance and talk about our interests.
The Kindergarten group is for the children who are 2.5-3 years old; the year before they go into our pre-school building.
The term after your child turns three years old we introduce them to Montessori activities. They will begin to have daily Montessori taster lessons where, in small groups, the children get the opportunity to learn and use Montessori equipment, using gross and fine motor skills whilst gaining independent self-help skills.  Your child will have free choice of the activities on the shelves and will receive one to one teaching when learning how to use activities and develop new skills.
We teach and encourage children’s independence which prepares and helps them as they grow older.”

[H1] My Little House - My Place To Learn

“Little House is our lovely open plan area for our 3 and 4 year olds for their final year before going to school. This area is specifically laid out with activities planned for the children to extend their knowledge and understanding and develop their independence.
The Montessori approach is embedded into the daily routine as well as the group participating in Montessori lessons. As a team we strive to develop your child’s confidence and help them to thrive in all areas of learning. We encourage problem solving, independent thinking and promote self help skills to support a smooth transition into primary school.”

Montessori Lessons
The environment is set out with activities on the shelves for children to touch, feel and explore, bringing the activity from the shelf to the mat. Children take control of their own learning experience. The room is set for children by the teacher to encourage independence, freedom within limits, and a sense of order. The child, through individual choice, makes use of what the environment offers to develop themselves, interacting with myself when support or guidance is needed.
Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play. Children make their own creative choices in their learning, with age appropriate activities to support and guide children in learning.
The Montessori lead will make notes on the children’s interests, use homemade materials and activities based on a smaller scale of real life activities, whilst naming the activity with the proper terms and make the children aware of the goal of the activity, through presentation. Activities are repeated several times to be able to achieve and to expand on the individual child’s interest.
In a typical Montessori session, the children will take their own mat and roll it out on the floor, making sure there is space and no touching of other mats, as this is their own individual space. They then will go to the shelf, to select an activity of their choosing. The teacher will observe the child to see how they can do this independently, the child may ask for help, in which the teacher will present the activity to them, showing them the way to use the activity. During the session, he teacher will do a presentation of an activity of the week to encourage the children to select this independently and to achieve the desired end result. Observations are completed on each child everyday and notes are made to see where extra support is needed.
At the end of session, the children finish their activities and put them back on the shelf. They return their mat to the box, after independently rolling it up. Once the session is complete we may talk about topics which support their learning; such as letters, numbers or shapes.

They are chosen for their dedication and understanding of this age group and work hard to develop your child’s independence, confidence and knowledge in preparation for their transition into school. This age group will love the new experiences that the nursery has to offer. They are encouraged to explore their surroundings and develop their social interactions through a wide variety of activities. Daily activities are planned weekly using the Early Years Foundation Stage framework to cater for each individual’s needs and interests and to ensure that a broad range of learning opportunities for the development of all areas of learning. Our Preschool staff are always available for advice and support for every step of your child’s developmental journey.

[H1] My Little Forest - My Space to Grow

“In Little Forest the child’s interests take centre stage. We have a variety of tools always accessible for the children to use. We have mud kitchen, shovels and spades, a planting area where the children can plant their own bulbs and plants. We have sensory plants and access to local wildlife that the children can observe at their own leisure. We use learner-led, nature based exploration which helps your child to develop their emotional intelligence; build resilience and learn how to take risks in a supportive environment, through activities such as bug hunting, making mud pies and building with sticks.
Outdoor learning also teaches children the value of protecting the environment around them.
The children have open access to Little Forest from 9am until 4pm; in good weather the children are able to have their lunch and snacks outside in our heated Little Shelter.”
