Semantic Coherence — The Lens

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Semantic Coherence Homepage promise vs. Sub-page reality.
17 Impact Weight: 20 / 100
85% Reputation

The homepage H1 Salt of the earth and the hero claim of being rustic and hearty are directly supported by the sub-pages without any significant drift. The Range sub-page delivers on the promise of quality by naming specific provenance partners like Quicke’s, Eversfield Organic Farm, and Creedy Carver. There is a slight disconnect between the small-batch artisan imagery and the 2023 acquisition by Europe Snacks, but the site is transparent about this ownership change in the timeline. The transition from Devon-centric storytelling to European corporate scale is handled with enough technical detail on local production to maintain coherence.

Semantic Coherence is read from the heading hierarchy first: what each page announces in its H1 and headings, then whether the body actually delivers on it. Below is the structure the engine mapped, followed by the clean text to check for drift between promise and reality.

[H1] Salt of
the earth
[H2] (or, in our case, the sea!)
Our snacks are rustic, hearty, and full of flavour. They’re made with produce sourced from our fields to our fringes, and everything we do is about packing as much of what makes our county so special into every big crunchy handful.

Explore Our Range

[H2] Wade in
There’s loads to discover round these parts. Get your bearings below.

Better tasted than talked about. Give ‘em a go.

[H3] HANDCOOKED POPCORN
Some say that round ‘ere we don’t like change. We love change… and to prove it we got busy with a load of corn.

[H3] RIDGES
Our Handcooked Ridges – ridge cut crisps so crunchy they’ve been known to spook the cattle.

[H2] Where graft meets craft
We take people as we find ‘em down here and we never judge a book by its cover (probably because we don’t have much time to read). Our snacks might look a little rough around the edges, but that doesn’t mean they’re not skilfully produced. That’s why every hefty crunch tells a story that’s all about graft… and craft.

[H1] Bags O’ Personality
It’s a simpler life down ‘ere… and that informed how Richard Burt and his wife Linda set about making lush snacks. All we need are great quality potatoes, oil, and delicious seasoning (and maybe a smidge of elbow grease, craft, and passion of some pretty hard-working folk).
It ain’t rocket science… but we always aim high. That’s why you can taste the difference in every crunch.

[H2] SEASONED
WITH Quality AND CRAFT
Who puts the names of the potato farmer and the master fryer on their bags? We do!
It’s ‘cos we want to celebrate the craft and authenticity. It’s why we also fry in small batches, not because we don’t like hard work (quite the opposite).
We just want to make sure that every batch of hearty crunchiness is seasoned with quality and craft. We do other seasonings too… but we’ll come to those later.

[H2] Burts

[H3] ‘ERE’S A STORY FOR YOU

[H3] 1995

Artisan food fans Richard Burt and his wife Linda go to America and discover… crisps? Sounds like the perfect trip!

[H3] 1997

Like most things down ‘ere, the perfect hand-cooked crisps take time. They put in 2 years of hard graft, while leavin’ out the artificial additives and preservatives. And one other thing – each crisp needed to be as thick as the morning mist rolling in off the sea.

[H3] 1999

Burts was born in Kingsbridge, Devon in 1999

[H3] 2001

Great taste travels. Burts wins several national awards including the Great Taste and Taste of the West awards… lush.

[H3] 2006

We outgrew the Kingsbridge production plant and moved down to a new site in Plymouth… must be somethin’ in the soil!

[H3] 2014

It’s all about family down ‘ere… Burts is now owned by the Patel family.

[H3] 2016

There’s flavour in these rolling hills! We follow our tastebuds to discover the first of many provenance partners in the Southwest to season our crisps.

[H3] 2016

We love a tractor… especially red ones. Burts become the first hand-cooked crisp company to be Red Tractor potato assured.

[H3] 2023

The year when Burts became a part of a much larger snack-lovin family, Europe Snacks.

[H3] 2025

Burts became the first brand in the UK snack category to use 55% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material in our most popular crisp packaging! Calculated on a mass balance approach and ISCC certicied… fancy and sustainable, eh?

[H1] WE’RE JUST CHIPPIN’ AWAY
We like proper tasty food made of real, natural ingredients, so we care about doin’ right by the world around us. That’s why we’re always working away at a whole bunch of things to be more sustainable.
We’re well proud of some of the things we’ve achieved so far, but we know we’ve got a ways to go yet.

Reduce

[H3] Reduce
In 2024 we reduced the plastic in our Burts Chip bags in the UK by 20%. We did it by reducin’ the thickness of the OPP film that makes our bags. From 50 microns to 40 to be precise.

Reuse

[H3] Reuse
Our most popular flavours (Sea Salt & Malt Vinegar, Lightly Sea Salted, Mature Cheddar & Onion and Devon Roast Beef) now use 55% Post Consumer Recycled Plastic in their bags. That means we’ve been able to reduce virgin plastics by 55% in those bags.
If you like a bit of detail with yer good news, you’ll want to know that our 55% recycled plastic figure is calculated based on a mass balance approach and ISCC certified.
The long and short of this is that every bag might have a slightly different amount, but overall there’s a verified minimum of 55% recycled plastic used..

[H3] Recycle
In the UK crisp packets aren’t part of household recylin’ collections. That’s as frustratin’ to us as to you, no doubt. We hope that things change. In the meantime we reckon the enjoyment of a decent crisp is worth the little bit of effort it takes to save up your soft plastic recyclin’ and drop it off somewhere they’ll take care of it for you. [IMG: Farmer picking potatoes]

[H2] WORKIN’ WITH FARMERS
We like our spuds to come from close by, with most of our farmers bein’ in the West Country and most of our taters grown in either Cornwall or Somerset – they do grow ’em proper tasty down this way after all. And ’cause we batch cook you’ll find the name of the grower who grew the spuds in your pack printed on the back.
All the farms are red tractor-approved, which means you know it’s been farmed with care and assured to very strict standards.
You can read about our potato farmers here.
We also use some clever tech to measure the carbon footprints of the potatoes we source. We track them from seeds to delivery to us. The tech we use means we’re able to do this without addin’ lots of work to our farmer’s already busy schedule.

[H2] CUTTIN’ FOOD WASTE
We’ve got a lot cookin’ that’ means we’re at Zero to Landfill at our crisppin’ sites:

Our used fryin’ oil is turned into biodiesel.

Any unseasoned crisps that don’t make the grade get turned into a special high-quality animal feed by the clever folks at SugaRich.

Other food waste goes to an Anearobic Digister to be turned into biogas.

[H1] Frequently Asked Questions

[H2] What is PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) material?

Post-consumer recycled (PCR) material refers to plastic that has reached the end of its intended use and is generated by households, commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities as end-users. This material is collected and processed, and a part of it undergoes chemical recycling to be transformed into new plastic, closing the loop for circularity. Polymers from chemical recycling retain the same properties as virgin polymers, ensuring high-quality materials for new applications.

[H2] What is PCR packaging made from?

PCR packaging is made from plastic that has been recycled after it has been used by consumers. This means the plastic has already gone through a recycling process, and it is repurposed into new products, including packaging materials. By using PCR plastic, companies help reduce the demand for new plastic production, contributing to environmental sustainability.

[H2] How does using PCR plastic help the environment?

Using PCR plastic reduces the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills or oceans, helping to combat pollution. It also reduces the need for new plastic production, which cuts down on energy consumption and lowers carbon emissions. By choosing PCR packaging, you are supporting a circular economy that keeps plastic in use for longer periods.

[H2] Can I recycle this new packaging? If so, where?

Yes, our new PCR packaging can be recycled. Recycling capabilities can vary by region; however, you can recycle packs at large supermarkets. You will be able to find out more information about recycling our crisp packets via the on-pack recycling label (OPRL).

[H2] Why have you switched your packs to 55% PCR?

By using PCR plastic, it helps us reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills or, worse, the ocean, which is a crucial step in addressing the growing plastic pollution crisis. Using PCR plastic also helps create a circular economy, where materials are reused, recycled, and kept in circulation, rather than being disposed of after a single use. PCR plastic typically has a lower carbon footprint than virgin plastic, as it reduces the need for extracting and processing new raw materials (like petroleum). This process also saves our overall energy usage, contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

[H2] Will this new packaging affect the taste of the crisps?

The new packaging will not affect the taste of our crisps you know and love.
Food packaging made from PCR plastic must comply with stringent safety regulations set by authorities like the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority). These standards ensure that recycled plastics are safe for contact with food and do not release harmful substances or alter the taste of food. During the recycling process, PCR plastic is cleaned, sterilised, and tested to meet these standards, which reduces the risk of contamination that could impact food flavour or safety.”
