[H3] Q: How do you commission a bespoke piece of jewellery?
A: If you want to have a hand in the design of your own piece of unique jewellery you need to deal with a bespoke jeweller.    There are different types of jeweller.Retail jewellers buy in factory-made products which they then retail to the general public, a bespoke jeweller will create a unique piece to your exact requirements. It is important to choose a jeweller that designs and makes unique items from scratch. Unfortunately, some jewellers advertising a bespoke service simply assemble mass-produced components.In reality, this is not bespoke jewellery. It is customised design which constitutes a half-way-house between mass-produced and bespoke, allowing only limited possibilities.  Aurum designer-jewellers specialises in truly bespoke jewellery. We start from scratch with every commission, which means you have control over every aspect of the design. Even if you don’t know exactly what you are looking for you can design your own jewellery! You’ll meet a highly-skilled craftsman who will guide you through the design process. It is our job to find out what you really want.By asking the right questions we’ll draw out of you the information we need about your taste and lifestyle. We’ll generally produce pencil sketches, and might show items if stock or photographs of previous commissions. Once we have arrived at design that fulfils your requirements we’ll have the specifications we need to calculate a price for you.

[H3] Q: Why buy a bespoke engagement ring?
A: There are lots of reasons for choosing a bespoke engagement ring! You have an idea for a ring design that you cannot find anywhere. - The only solution is to have it made for you. You have found a design that would be your perfect engagement ring; if only you could just “tweak” the specifications slightly. You want a ring that reflects your personality and is unique to youBeing involved in the design of your own unique engagement ring is much more fun and more personal than buying a factory-made ring!You want the exclusivity of a ring that is a bit different from what is generally available.Proposing with an engagement ring that you helped to design says so much more than with a mass produced ring that you just picked from a tray!
[H3] Q: What is the cost of a bespoke engagement ring?
A: You might expect bespoke engagement rings to be prohibitively expensive, but this is not necessarily the case. A bespoke engagement ring is designed to suit your requirements, which includes fitting within your price-range.The price of any ring, (whether bespoke or ready-made), is determined by two things;1. the cost of materials - i.e. precious metal and gemstone(s) and 2. the cost of labour needed to create it.  If we design a ring for you we can make sure the price fits your pocket.Bespoke engagement rings are generally much more labour-intensive than mass-produced rings made in a mould. However, because we are both the manufacturer and the retailer, the price is likely to be similar to that of a "standard ring with the same material content, (the same type and weight of metal, and the same size and quality of diamond). Looking for a more contemporary engagement ring? – Take a look at our  Flick  and Infinity styles.At Aurum designer-jewellers we can show you a selection of diamonds. During an initial consultation we discuss your requirements, including the carat weight, the shape, the quality and the budget.If we don’t have the perfect stone in stock we ask our suppliers to send us a selection of stones that fit your criteria. When you see unmounted stones next to one another it is easier to compare them and pick the one that is right for you.These days most diamonds weighing 0.25ct or more come with a certificate from an independent grading lab like the GIA. This can be helpful when choosing the diamond for your engagement ring.We are happy to discuss the Four Cs (Carat (weight), Colour, Clarity, and Cut) which are the basic criteria that determine the price of a diamond. The first C relates to size and the other three to quality. For most people the choice of diamond is a balance between size and quality.We’ll offer our expert advice as required.If you would like to find out more, we are always happy to discuss individual requirements and quote prices.
[H3] Q: How long does it take to make a bespoke engagement ring?
A: If you are thinking of proposing with a bespoke engagement ring,  and you have a date in mind for the proposal, you need to make sure there is enough time  for the ring to be designed and made.Typically the process starts with an initial consultation at the shop. This is so we  can discuss your ideas, and find out what your requirements are. Selecting the DiamondUnless we have the ideal stone in stock, we'll probably need to source a selection of suitable diamonds to show you. This usually takes just a few days. We schedule another appointment for you to come and see them.If you pick a stone, we'll design your ring to hold it.This can be a pencil sketch, done at the same time, or it might be done using CAD, which will take longer (typically  1 -2 weeks).Once we have agreed the design and price, we take a 25% deposit. At this point we would agree a date for completion. The time required will depend on the complexity of the design and the method of production used.Typically, from the date of order to the ring being finished will be somewhere between six and  eight weeks. Sometimes, if we are not too busy with other orders, we can do it in less time. We suggest that you allow as much time as possible.  This will take the pressure off everyone, and it will mean you can collect your finished ring with plenty of time to spare.
[H3] Q: Is it possible to have an engagement ring made to my individual requirements?
A: Yes!  At Aurum designer-jewellers, we specialise in creating bespoke engagement rings.We offer a free design consultation to come and discuss ideas with a skilled goldsmith from our workshop.This one-to-one service means we get to hear at first hand, what it is you are hoping to achieve.We lead you gently through the whole design process, offering as many helpful suggestions, and as much expert advice as you need, to arrive at a ring that's perfect for you and your partner.
[H3] Q: Do you use GIA certified diamonds?
Yes. When making engagement rings  we source GIA certified diamonds ( mined diamonds weighing 0.25 carat and above).
[H3] Q: Can you help me choose the right diamond?
A: Yes. When you come for a consultation, we guide you through the 4Cs and give you as much advice as tyou need, to help you choose a stone that suits your style and budget.
[H3] Q: What is the difference between handmade and mass-produced engagement rings?
A: The majority of jewellers are retailers, and they sell factory-made, mass-produced jewellery, that is made using moulds.There will be hundreds, or even thousands of identical items that are available from retailers across the country. A handmade ring does not involve the use of moulds,  so nothing is predetermined. Dealing with a skilled goldsmith, you have the chance to specify every aspect of the design to suit you.  There won't be another ring that is exactly the same as yours.Knowing that you are proposing with a ring that you helped to design makes the occasion even more special.
[H3] Q: Are your rings hand wrought or made using CAD
A: When we started, back in 1985 there was no CAD, and everything was completely handwrought, and we still love the hand-making process. However, in recent years, as CAD has become the norm in the jewellery industry, we have introduced it as another tool in our toolbox.Sometimes a piece that would be unaffordable for a particular customer as a hand-wrought piece, becomes a viable option.

If you have an engagement ring, we can design your wedding ring to complement it perfectly. Simply by matching features like the profile, depth and width you can make it seem like your rings were designed as a set.If your engagement ring does not sit comfortably with a straight wedding ring, we can produce a bespoke
fitted wedding ring that is shaped to sit perfectly alongside it.

Many couples like the idea of matching wedding rings. If both partners have the same taste they could have rings that are virtually identical, but scaled to fit the hand and the finger-size.However if partners have different tastes, we look for design elements that appeal to both of them.It might be just the material, or some design feature that will mark them out as a pair.Often, a bride will have dainty ring set with diamonds, and the groom, a chunkier version without diamonds.

A: Finding a wedding ring that complements your engagement ring perfectly can be difficult. However many rings you look at, it could be that none looks quite right with your engagement ring. The answer is to commission a bespoke wedding ring. This allows you to specify every aspect of the design. Aurum individually designs and makes wedding rings to individual requirements. We are experts in creating wedding rings specifically to complement the customer’s engagement ring.Ideally, the two rings should look like they were designed and made together as a matching pair.They need to have features in common. If you want the wedding ring to be wider than your engagement ring, the thickness and the profile or cross-section of the band can still match. [H3] Q: How can I find a wedding ring to fit with my engagement ring?
A: If you have an engagement ring that does not fit with a straight wedding ring, you’ll need a fitted wedding ring. Finding a ready-made wedding ring that fits perfectly with your engagement ring, and is the right width, and has the right profile is practically impossible. A bespoke fitted wedding ring is shaped to follow the exact contour of your engagement ring so the two sit flush together without a gap. This is one of our most popular commissions.We work in platinum and gold, with or without diamonds.
[H3] Q: How much does a handmade wedding ring cost?
A: The price of a wedding ring is individually calculated based on the costs of materials and labour needed to produce it.Gold and platinum are sold by weight, and we calculate this  from the width, depth and finger-size of the ring. The labour element depends on the design.  The least labour-intensive style is a perfectly plain band.  The more complex the design, the longer it takes someone the create, and the more it will cost. Adding diamonds obvoiusly adds cost, which is determined by the number, size and quality of the stones used.If you come for a design consultation discuss your requirements so we can discover all the information we need to calculate accurate prices for you.A consultation is free and without obligation.Because we are both manufacturer and retailer, you are not paying a middleman markup.
[H3] Q: How can I design my own wedding ring?
A: The thought of designing your own wedding ring can be daunting, but it is really a  straightforward thing to do!It's really about making a lot of small choices. When you put them all together you have your design.If you look at pre-made rings, someone else (the manufacturer) has already made those choices.When you book a design consultation at Aurum, a highly-skilled jeweller from our on-site workshop will sit down with you, and talk you through the design process.If you have an engagement ring we'll start by taking a look at that. You need to consider how much room you have on your finger for the wedding ring. Your might like your wedding ring to be exactly the same width as your engagement ring, but if you want it wider we need to establish the optimum width.  (We work to the nearest 1/10 of a mm, so you can be quite precise about this measurement.)The depth is also important. We usually suggest that the two rings should have the same depth, so that they sit on one level although, if your engagement ring is very thin, it might be wise to make the wedding ring a tad deeper to add a bit more strength.Another consideration is the profile or cross-section of the band. Again, you might like to match the band of your engagement ring.Generally, the more features the engagement and wedding ring have in common, the more harmonious the overall look.Once we have thought about these basic features, we can move on to the details, including surface finishes, textures or patterns.  If you like the idea of diamonds in your band there will be lots more things to consider. These include the number of diamonds, their size and quality, the method of setting, etc..By the end of your consultation you will have designed your own wedding ring. [H3] What is the difference between a full and half eternity ring?
A traditional full-eternity ring has stones set all around the band, so that when you turn the ring there is no beginning or end to the row of diamonds . - This symbolises eternity.  These days, half-eternity rings are more popular.A half-eternity ring has diamonds set on the top half only, with the back of the ring left plain. There are pros and cons to both types.Rings can sometimes turn on the finger, and with a half eternity ring, the plain back can come to the top, but with a full eternity ring the stones are always showing and there is no need to turn it back into position.The area under the finger is the part of the ring that takes most wear-and-tear. Keeping the diamonds on the front of the ring means the stones and their settings are less likely to be damaged and are less subject to wear.The plain underside of a half-eternity leaves an area that can be worked on in future. If the size of your finger changes over time, which is quite likely, an alteration can be carried out. With most full-eternity rings re-sizing is not possible.A half-eternity ring takes fewer diamonds, which can mean either that you spend less on the ring, or that can have larger diamonds for the same sort of price!
[H3] When do you give an eternity ring?
There are no rules, but usually it is to mark an important milestone event in someone’s Life. Traditionally, the eternity ring comes after the engagement ring and the wedding ring.Often it is given to celebrate a special wedding anniversary. -You might choose the first wedding anniversary, or maybe the fifth, or the tenth. A popular reason for giving an eternity ring is to celebrate the birth of a baby.Eternity rings can be given to celebrate birthdays too; especially one of the “big” ones that end in a zero.You might choose to give an eternity ring just to say "I love you".
[H3] What's the difference between a diamond-set wedding ring and an eternity ring?
A ring that one person would describe as a diamond wedding ring, another might call an eternity ring. Diamond wedding rings are sometimes “blind-set” which means there is no hole under the stones, whereas eternity rings normally have “back-holes”.
[H3] How can I find an eternity ring to complement my engagement and wedding rings?
Finding an eternity ring that complements your engagement ring  and wedding ring perfectly can be difficult. However many rings you look at, it could be that none looks quite right with your other rings. The answer is to commission a bespoke eternity ring. [H3] Where is an eternity ring worn?
An eternity ring traditionally sits alongside the engagement ring and wedding ring, so you should keep this in mind when choosing it. All three should complement one another. If the wedding ring is a fitted one, it makes sense to balance it with a fitted eternity ring.These days many people wear the eternity ring on the right hand.  Sometimes this is because the engagement ring and wedding ring do not leave enough room for a third ring.In this case, it is not necessary to match the other rings. If the eternity ring is to be worn alongside other rings, it is usual to go for the same metal. Usually, the stones in a diamond eternity ring are much smaller than those in the engagement ring, so the engagement ring remains the main focus of attention.
[H3] Can a bespoke eternity ring be fitted to sit with my other rings?
Absolutely. Many of our clients commission an eternity ring to sit alongside an engagement ring and wedding ring — often called a 'ring trio' or 'bridal set'. We can design your eternity ring to complement the others perfectly, matching metal type, stone size and setting style.

[H3] Selecting your gems

We always keep in stock a collection of beautiful unmounted precious stones, in gorgeous colours and interesting and unusual cuts. Many of these could become the centrepiece of a bespoke dress ring.
Selecting the gem(s) is the first step towards designing your unique cocktail ring.Sometimes, we start with a design and find  a suitable stone. However, often it is the stone that inspires the design.Here are a couple of very bright and sparkly Trillions from our stock. One is a Citrine, the other an Amethyst.

[H3] How about some diamonds?

Sometimes we make dress rings that are set only with diamonds.However, it is more usual for the main stone to be a larger semi-precious stone with just a few accent diamonds to add a little extra sparkle. It's really up to you.Selecting the gem(s) is the first step towards designing your unique dress ring.This is a platinum and yellow gold cocktail ring with  a yellow sapphire and diamonds.

We often make dress rings where the customer supplies the stone(s).Sometimes the customer will have visited a country where stones are mined, and they purchases one as a souvenir.  It could be a Sapphire from Sri Lanka, or perhaps an opal from Australia or a Tanzanite from Tanzania.We made this platinum ring to hold the customer's own Sapphire.

Can I supply my own stone for a dress ring?

We often make bespoke dress rings that incorporating a gemstone supplied by the client.  If you brought back a stone from a holiday, don't leave it sitting in a drawer!  We could turn it into a piece of jewellery such as a dress ring or a cocktail ring, that you can enjoy wearing.It might be an opal from Australia, a sapphire from Sri Lanka or Thailand, or maybe an Emerald or a Tourmaline from Brazil, or a Tanzanite from Tanzania. Pendants and earrings can be small, simple and discreet for everyday wear, large and ostentatious if you really want to make a statement, or anywhere in between!
As with all our handmade jewellery, each piece can be designed to suit your character, your lifestyle and your pocket.

[H3] Semi-precious stones

Many of the pendants and earrings we make feature semi-precious stones.
The examples shown here are from our stock.  Both feature a large vibrant gem as the "centre-piece", enhanced by a scattering of small diamonds.

[H3] Sail pendants

A very popular style for us is what we call "Sail" pendants.
Every one is individually designed and handmade to individual requirements, so no two will ever be the same.
They always feature a "random" scattering of diamonds.

Wedding jewellery will always include wedding rings, but you might also wish to have a pair of earrings or a pendant to wear for the big day itself, and beyond.These can be designed around the theme of the wedding.
