Commodity Fingerprint — The Lens

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

The site uses some industry jargon like ‘hand-crafted’ and ‘bespoke commissions,’ but these are exempted from high penalties because they are tied to specific technical deliverables (e.g., the ‘Series One’ time-only wristwatch). The value proposition is entirely unique; the narrative of being George Daniels’ only protege cannot be copy-pasted by any competitor, rendering the ‘template language’ penalty moot.

Commodity Fingerprint is read from the page structure first: templated copy tends to repeat the same heading patterns and shapes seen across an industry. Below is the heading hierarchy captured, then the known cliché patterns for this industry to weigh it against.

Roger W Smith | Philosophy

H2 Roger’s philosophy has always been to take elements of Britain’s great horological past and advance them into the twenty-first century. To this end, he combines traditional hand building and finishing techniques with cutting-edge technology.
H2 From early in his career, Roger has sought to bring the production of his watches fully in-house. Today his watches are designed, manufactured and built within his workshop on the Isle of Man. All but the most specialised components, such as sapphire crystals and jewels, are made in-house from raw materials.

Roger W Smith | Workshop

H2 Roger created his first workshop  in 1989 in order to start work on his first pocket watch, before moving to the Isle of Man to work with George Daniels in 1998.
H2 George Daniels bequeathed his workshop collection to Roger in 2011 and this historic equipment is now used alongside cutting-edge technology.
H5 Throughout the movement, traditional hand finishing is applied by the watchmaker.  Roger’s work is characterised by its frosted and gilded plates, black polished steelwork, flame-blued screws and hand engine turned dials.
H6 Roger W. Smith Ltd was founded in 2001 and with it came Roger’s first workshop on the island. The workshop moved to its current site in 2018.Since 2006, Roger has been developing the Daniels co-axial escapement specifically for use in his own movements. It has been quite a journey, through conceiving the single wheel, then reducing its size and weight, the result is now a super-lightweight, 4.5mm single wheel design.
H6 The refinements made to the escapement have enhanced the efficiency of the movement, allowing a reduction in mainspring strength. This reduction in power throughout the mechanism helps to minimise wear and extend service intervals. Each watch is made to order.
H6 All but the most specialised components are made in-house from raw materials*, before being worked by hand to achieving a depth and feel that mass production cannot match. Roger’s watches can take up to two years to make and may include over 400 components.
