Welcome to The Hay Shed! We are Ian, James and Graeme, three brothers running our family farm. We have been producing the greenest grass for decades, which has been perfectly prepared for your pets.
Our family farm is based in Northumberland, nestled between the rolling Cheviot hills and the gorgeous east coast beaches. It has been in the family for almost a century and has the perfect environment to produce a variety of crops.
We have been providing the equine industry with our tasty hay for over a decade, allowing us to finesse growing nutrient-dense grass and develop a shed drying system to ensure quality control for every bale. Small pets should be fed hay of the best quality, too, so we endeavoured to get it delivered right to your door so your furry friends can tuck into the good stuff from the comfort of their homes.

Grow It
We grow several varieties of grass across the farm, taking care that each field is tended to ensure nutrient-dense crops. The farms’ location in Northumberland provides the perfect balance of rain and sunshine, so the lush grass continues to grow for up to eight months of the year.

Mow It
Once each grass has matured to produce an abundance of seed heads, we mow it to capture it at its peak. We lift it immediately and transport it to our Hay Shed to ensure none of the crucial nutrients are lost and to prevent any sun bleaching.

Dry It
We use a state-of-the-art drying floor to carefully control the process of removing moisture from the grass. This allows us to produce hay which is perfectly dried without losing its sweet flavour, essential nutrients, and rich green colour.

Pack It
Our packaging process removes all dust, which is harmful to small pets’ respiratory systems, and then it’s hand packed by our lovely team in eco-friendly boxes. We guarantee same day dispatch when ordered by 12 noon, so your pets can enjoy the best farm fresh hay without any hassle.

[H3] Sustainability is at our heart

Ground source heat pump

Our state-of-the-art drying floor is powered by renewable energy sourced from our ground source heat pump. This clever machine draws geothermal energy from the earth beneath the farm, producing the heat and hot water that we use. This heat is then passed through a series of pipes which run under the Hay Shed, providing a toasty environment, and is made to be the perfect temperature for drying the hay to optimum moisture levels.

Solar Panels

Our electricity is sourced from 3500 solar panels that are located on top of every shed roof across the farm. They produce 900kw of power a day, providing plenty of green energy and reducing our carbon footprint. Although Northumberland is not the sunniest place in the world, the sunny rays greatly benefit our carbon footprint.

Eco-friendly packaging

We have tried to keep our packaging to the bare minimum to reduce waste, and everything is made from materials which can be easily recycled through your curbside collection. Alternatively, you can take a pair of scissors to the box and give it a second use as an extra house for your pets to play in, so they can continue the fun after eating the delicious contents!

Our Timothy Hay is sweet in taste, coarse in nature, and gorgeously green. It is the perfect all-rounder and loved by many small pets.

Meadow
Our Meadow Hay is packed full of a variety of grass types, creating tasty variety of your small pet.

The nutty flavour of Oat Hay provides variety for your animal which delivering the same crucial nutrients as some of the most popular hays.

Our Rye hay is higher in protein and fibre, helping give your pets a little energy boost! It is sweet, green and has tasty long stalks.

Our Alfalfa is nutrient dense and delicious! It’s higher protein and calcium content makes it more suited toward baby, pregnant, elderly or sick small pets.

Green Wheat Hay offers crunchy long stalks and seed heads. It is harvested before the crop ripens and the seeds are fully formed.

Our state-of-the-art drying system allows us to control the hay moisture content and drying process. This allows us to remove the moisture while retaining the vital nutrients, sweet taste and green colour.

Your fluffy friends have delicate respiratory systems which can be harmed easily by dust, so we make sure to remove it from our hay through a mechanical packing system before it is sent direct to your door.

A rabbit’s hay should be refreshed daily or every two days. Rabbits should be grazing through approximately one handful of hay a day. If you find your rabbit isn’t doing so, you should introduce a new type of hay to their diet to see if they prefer other tastes and textures – check out our shop for options!

Since rabbits should eat their size (not weight) of hay every single day, on average, they could go through 4.5 kg (10lbs) per month.

Hay is the closest food which mimics a rabbit’s natural diet. Hay allows for rabbits to have great gut health as it provides essential nutrients and the correct amount of fibre. Rabbits would graze all day in the wild, so it’s important to ensure they have an unlimited supply.

Yes, Timothy Hay is a very popular type of hay amongst small pets. Timothy Hay is fibre-rich, perfectly low in calcium and ideal for small animals. Our Timothy is fragrant and green in colour due to our shed drying processes, which means it is not sun bleached – making it extra sweet and tasty!

In short, no they don’t. Hay is dried grass and the most vital part of a rabbit’s diet. Straw is dried stalks from grain crops and is much more suitable for bedding as it is warmer and less likely to be consumed. Look at our Barley Straw, which may be the perfect bedding for your bunny!

Yes, guinea pigs need multiple nutrients like adults, and hay is one of the most important for ensuring they have a healthy digestion and to help prevent the growth of their teeth. Additionally, an important aspect of a guinea pig’s diet is its vitamin C intake.

Hay is the closest food to a guinea pig’s natural diet, not only is it nutritionally essential for them, but it can keep them happy and amused as they can forage around as they would in the wild. We offer different types of hay, meeting the needs and tastebuds of the fussiest small pets.

No, guinea pigs will not overeat standard grass hay such as Timothy, Oat or Meadow, there should always be an unlimited amount available for them to enjoy. They could however overeat hays that are higher in protein such as Alfalfa or Rye and these should only be given in small amounts as a treat.

Different guinea pigs will require different hays and prefer the tastes of others. It can be said Timothy Hay is the most common and well-known hay used for guinea pigs. This is the best all-rounder for standard healthy adult small pets. Timothy holds all the essential nutrients your small pets will need for digestion and dental health. However, there are many others, some of which are good for underweight, overweight, young or older pets, and for those who are fussy fellas. Check out our selection of hays here.

Yes, baby guinea pigs can eat hay. After about a month they will stop drinking milk and start to eat solids. They can have a small selection of hay, pellets, and very small amounts of fruit/veggies. Additionally, Alfalfa is a popular choice to feed as it is has a higher protein content, perfect for growing guineas!

Timothy is a better choice if you have a fit and healthy adult guinea pig. Alfalfa should be phased out at 4-7 months as it can be fattening or cause issues for healthy adult pets. However, if your pet is underweight, elderly, young or feeding/pregnant, Alfalfa or Rye can be a great choice to help give extra energy and pack on the ounces!
